The hacking trend is on the rise with stories of accounts being hacked every day. The latest hacked story is that of TalkTalk, the telecoms confirmed stories that its website was hacked and a number of client’s details were exposed. The matter currently under investigations has led to the arrest of 3 suspected hackers 2 are said to be teenagers. I got a mail this month from a webhost stating their server was hacked with also lead to data breach, the mail also stated that the matter was being resolved.
Our lives the 21st century involves the use of social media which is our virtual community where we connect with people build reputation and uphold our reputation. But what happens when our reputation is tarnished? This was the ordeal of a friend who had his facebook account hacked and pictures and links NSFW were shared on his page.
How can we save our accounts from being hacked? This steps I hope will show you how.
USE YOUR TRUE IDENTITY INFORMATION
» Provide your true identity details and follow all the account verification process
PASSWORD SECURITY
» Reduce the chances of your account being hacked by using strong passwords.
» Also avoid sharing your password with anyone; never store your password in your email or in your dairy.
AVOID LOGIN IN ON A PUBLIC COMPUTER
» Do not log in on a public computer, e.g. café
» If you do use public computers never forget to log out
» Never click on the “keep me logged in” box
» Look out for anyone around you as you key in your password
DO NOT GRANT ACCESS TO RANDOM THIRD PARTY APPS
» Before granting third party access to your account, be sure to do background checks on its reliability, safety etc.
USE FACEBOOK SECURITY SETTINGS
» Enable logging approval; this will require a special security code to be added whenever the account is accessed from an unknown browser
» “Browse facebook on a secure connection when possible” box should be checked > this will alert you if any login attempt is made on your account
IMPROVE YOUR PRIVACY SETTING
» Do not share updates publicly
» Be careful the kind of friend request you accept or avoid accepting friend requests from unknown persons
» Change your settings to allow requests from friends of friends
» Share video/picture contents with friends only
» Change timeline and tagging to be friends only
